There are many forms of fasting. All who chooses to fast must first consult their health care provider and choose a fast that best fits your needs.
I choose fasting because I wanted to speed up the healing process from the damaging effects of autoimmune diseases.
I’ve done various fasts such as water fasts, intermittent fasts, juice fasts, and mono meal fast. All were beneficial and effective based on what my body needed at that particular time.
Autoimmune diseases are driven by chronic inflammation. Fasting triggers, the production of anti-inflammatory molecules like β-hydroxybutyrate (a ketone body) and reduces the activity of pro-inflammatory cytokines (like TNF-α and IL-6).
In autoimmune diseases, the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s tissues. Fasting promotes immune system “resetting” by removing dysfunctional immune cells and encouraging the growth of new, healthier immune cells.
One of my primary reasons for fasting was to stimulate autophagy, a natural cellular process where the body clears out damaged cells and cellular debris. In autoimmune diseases, the buildup of defective cells can trigger immune attacks. By enhancing autophagy, fasting supports the removal of these problematic cells, promoting overall cellular health.
Another reason I’ve chosen to fast is to give my gut a much-needed “rest,” which supports a healthier balance of gut microbiota. Digestion is one of the body’s most energy-intensive processes, so by fasting periodically, I allow my body to redirect its energy toward healing and repairing tissues and organs.
